Unity Cup: NFF clarifies the status of the Super Eagles… Femi Azeez shines in his debut

The Secretary General of the Nigerian Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has shut down claims that Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 Unity Cup will be run by a Super Eagles B Team.

Sanusi insists that the Super Eagles are going through a transition phase and that the post-season tournament offers coaches the opportunity to see new players.

He also dismissed comments about the level of the opposition, insisting there are no more losers in football.

“Let me correct the impression that the team that is playing is called the b team, it is not the b team, it is the Super Eagles,” Sanusi said.

“When you talk about the b team, you are talking about the Chan team. These are the Super Eagles, but new faces will be injected, so they are not the b team, they are Super Eagles.

There are no minnows in football

The NFF scribe also highlighted fans’ concern that the Super Eagles are not experiencing real tests of the quality of their rivals in the Cup.

“I will also add that if you play against any country, you don’t expect, straight away, to get a victory over them. Football has become scientific: it’s not about the size of the country or how long you’ve been playing football, but what you can currently do.

“So we expect a tough opponent, but I can tell you that the Nigerians are prepared and the coach has invited equally good and committed players. I can assure you that Nigeria will play well by the grace of God.”

Nigeria opened their Unity Cup defense with a 2-0 win against Zimbabwe at The Valley.

The team now awaits the winner between Jamaica and India, when both teams meet on Wednesday.
