NDLEA discovers illicit drugs hidden in water purifiers imported from Europe

Officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of high-potency illicit drugs ingeniously hidden in water purifiers imported from Europe, as part of a series of coordinated operations across the country.

The agency revealed that the discovery was made on May 26, 2026, at a courier facility in Lagos, where officers discovered no less than three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA hidden inside imported devices shipped from the Netherlands.

In a statement released on Sunday by its director of media and advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the anti-drug agency described the seizure as a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on transnational drug trafficking syndicates.

Babafemi said the operation was part of wider enforcement actions which also led to numerous arrests and significant drug seizures in Kaduna, Niger and Enugu states.

In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, along with one Salomi Ezekiel, after raiding a residence in Gonin Gora area on May 24. During the operation, officers recovered 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilograms.

On the same day, along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway in Jere, officers intercepted a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa, who was found in possession of 380 rounds of 7.62mm military-style ammunition allegedly transported to Katsina State. The suspect and the ammunition were subsequently handed over to the relevant security authorities for further investigation.

In Niger State, the agency said its operatives, acting on intelligence, raided a warehouse in Gidan Kukah, Bosso Local Government Area, on May 27, recovering 457 kilograms of skunk. A suspect, identified as Godwin Zakka, was later arrested from his residence in Minna in connection with the kidnapping.

Similarly, in Enugu State, NDLEA patrol teams intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Onitsha-Enugu Highway on May 28. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 22,000 tramadol pills, 100 vials of pentazocine and 200 grams of bromazepam. A suspect, James Maigari Wisdom, has been arrested in connection with drug dealing.

The agency added that its war campaign against drug abuse continues to gain momentum nationwide, with awareness conferences conducted in schools and communities in several states, including Cross River, Taraba, Lagos and Anambra.

Reacting to the successes, NDLEA President and Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the officers for their resilience and professionalism, urging them to sustain the pace of operations against drug cartels.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to intensifying efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and reduce substance abuse across the country.
