Recently, the Presidential Media Team and the Renewed Hope Ambassadors took some journalists to inspect the existing Sokoto – Badagry highway.
The team expressed satisfaction with the level and quality of work carried out so far on the 1,068km road which connects several cities and communities in the north and south of the country. Enormous economic opportunities will open up between the two regions, especially for farmers, traders and tourists.
Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Umar Rafida, who led the media team around the project, commended President Bola Tinubu for undertaking the project more than 45 years after the road was first conceptualized by the administration of late President Shehu Shagari.
Work on the Kebbi and Sokoto sections of the project is progressing according to schedule.
Site engineer, Malami Aliyu, said the Kebbi section covers phases 2A and 2B of the project which extends from kilometer 120 to kilometer 385. Site clearance, backfilling works, stone base and underground works were all progressing steadily, while concrete pavement construction had covered 19km, including the installation of street lighting. The engineer estimated the level of completion at 40% for Section 2A and 16% for Section 2B.
One of President Bola Tinubu’s key campaign promises was to open Nigeria to much-needed economic and social development. One of the ways to deliver on this promise is its concept of legacy projects, especially in the transportation sector.
The Sokoto-Badagry Highway, the over 700km Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway, the 439km Akwanga – Jos- Bauchi – Gombe Road and the 482km Calabar – Abuja Highway are some of the ambitious road projects the President has undertaken to deliver on this promise.
These projects are critical to the administration’s ambition to build a trillion-dollar economy through strategic infrastructure investments.
Two hundred and fifty-eight kilometers of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway will pass through Kebbi State, while one hundred and twenty kilometers will pass through Sokoto State.
A reputable and quality international company, Hitech Construction Company Nigeria Limited, is the contractor managing the project and is delivering speed and quality
This highway will connect several states in Nigeria, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states.
You may be interested to know that 52% of highways pass through the northern region and 48% pass through the southern states. It will connect the two regions via concrete roads and railways.
This legacy project will bring abundant economic and social benefits to Nigeria once completed.
The highway will connect Sokoto state in the northwest to Badagry in the southwest, connecting remote communities and providing better access to markets across the country.
The new road would have a positive impact on the economy of the northern region, facilitate the movement of goods and services and promote social and economic development.
The project will allow agricultural products such as rice, tomatoes and onions to be transported faster from northern states to other markets outside the region. The project is also crucial for food security and regional economic growth.
It has the potential to promote trade, employment, social interrelationships and linkages to connect markets with production centers in the South.
President Bola Tinubu deserves commendation for executing this gigantic project linking the North West North Central and the South West for potential vital economic development.
