NAWOJ, NUJ finalize preparations for Women in Safety Summit – THIS UPDATE

By Barth Ikiebe

The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), African Independent Television (AIT) and Crime Reporters Global Nigeria, says preparations are well underway to hold the Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026.

The Chairperson, Media and Publicity Committee, WINSEC, Dr Adeola Ekine, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that the summit was a historic initiative designed to highlight the courage, passion, loyalty, commitment and sacrifices of women in protecting the nation.

Ekine said that in addition to creating a strategic platform for discussions on national security, peacebuilding, intelligence gathering, security, leadership and nation building, WINSEC 2026 will also recognize and celebrate women who make notable contributions to security, governance, media, defense and community development.

“In addition to recognition, the summit seeks to encourage stronger collaboration between security agencies, the media, politicians and the public in addressing the security challenges facing Nigeria.

“It promises to be a great national gathering focused on security, inclusion and development.

“The summit will attract distinguished personalities from across Nigeria and beyond, including senior government officials, security chiefs, politicians, members of the diplomatic corps, media executives, traditional rulers, corporate organisations, civil society groups, development partners, youth organizations and women leaders from different sectors,” he said.

Ekine said the event would also provide a rare opportunity for young women and emerging professionals to network, learn and interact with accomplished women and respected leaders in the field of security and leadership.

He said WINSEC was conceived as an annual, ongoing and sustainable initiative and not a one-off event.

However, she noted that the 2026 edition is expected to go down in history as one of the largest platforms dedicated to women engaged in security and nation-building.

He said the vision is to establish a long-term annual platform for dialogue, recognition, collaboration and support.

The summit is expected to become a nationally recognized movement that consistently amplifies women’s contributions to security, governance, peacebuilding and social development.

“Nigerians should brace themselves for a mind-blowing mother of all events.”

“As we prepare for WINSEC 2026, I encourage Nigerians, especially women and youth, to view security as a collective responsibility.

“Building a peaceful and secure nation requires collaboration, vigilance, patriotism, responsible communication and mutual respect among citizens.”

Ekine noted: “Women should continue to grow, lead and contribute meaningfully to national development because their voices, perspectives and leadership are vital to the progress of society.”
