NAF intervenes as search intensifies for kidnapped Oyo teachers and students

The Nigerian Air Force has stepped up efforts to secure the release of dozens of kidnapped teachers and students in Oyo State, deploying surveillance aircraft to help security agencies track the victims and their abductors.

Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed the development during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led by Air Officer Logistics Command, Air Marshal Abubakar Suleh.

According to the governor, the Air Force acted quickly following reports of the abduction, deploying air surveillance assets that have since provided critical intelligence for the ongoing rescue operation.

“The NAF immediately deployed air surveillance platforms as soon as the abduction was reported, providing critical intelligence to support search and rescue operations.

“Intelligence generated from surveillance missions continues to assist security agencies in tracking developments and coordinating efforts to ensure the safe release of victims,” he said.

Makinde noted that intelligence gathered through the air mission had significantly strengthened coordination among security agencies involved in the operation and enhanced efforts aimed at locating the victims.

While calling for calm among the affected residents, the governor assured families and residents that the state government is cooperating with security agencies and deploying all available resources to ensure a positive outcome.

The governor also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its quick intervention, disclosing that the surveillance aircraft was deployed at a time when Oyo State’s newly acquired air security assets were yet to become operational.

“The Air Force is providing the surveillance platform while the newly acquired Oyo State air assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base, Lagos”, he said.

Makinde explained that the country’s decision to acquire the air platform was made following extensive consultations with the Nigerian Air Force, specifically to ensure access to technical maintenance support, engineering expertise and pilot training.

He expressed confidence that these new assets will greatly enhance security surveillance and emergency response capabilities across Oyo State and surrounding areas once fully operational.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Suleh reiterated the Air Force’s commitment to support efforts to rescue abductees and address emerging security threats.

He stressed that the Nigerian Air Force remains in solidarity with the government and people of Oyo State and will continue to collaborate with other security agencies in confronting insecurity.

Suleh further assured residents that the Air Force would maintain its support to the ongoing operations aimed at ensuring the safe return of the kidnapped teachers and students.

He also commended the Oyo State Government for its continued support to Nigerian Air Force projects and infrastructure development in the state.

The Air Force reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders across the country to protect lives and property and strengthen security across the country.

This latest intervention follows attacks on May 15, 2026 on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, in which gunmen kidnapped 39 students and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46.

The mass kidnapping has raised concerns over school security and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect educational institutions from criminal attacks.
