Rwanda schools prepare for Scrabble debut

Forty student-athletes representing eight schools will battle for top honors at the first-ever Rwanda Inter-School Scrabble Tournament scheduled for June 28 at Nature Kigali in Nyarutarama.

This innovative competition marks an important milestone in the growth of Scrabble as an educational and competitive sport in Rwanda, bringing together some of the country’s brightest young minds for a day of strategy, vocabulary and intellectual challenge.

Speaking to Sportxvibe.com.ng, tournament organizer Niyogakiza Jean Claude (JC) described the event as a historic moment for school sports in Rwanda.

“This is our first inter-school Scrabble tournament in Rwanda,” he said.

Beyond determining the best Scrabble players among participating schools, he said the tournament was designed to promote literacy, critical thinking and vocabulary mastery among students.

According to Jean Claude, the initiative will also serve as a platform to identify and develop young Scrabble talent while strengthening the game’s position as a valuable extracurricular academic activity in schools across the country.

The event is expected to foster collaboration between schools, Rwandan education stakeholders including the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), the Rwanda Education Board (REB) and the wider Scrabble community.

“Ultimately, our goal is not just to crown a winner. It is to inspire a generation of confident, articulate students who carry the values of words, strategy and excellence far beyond the game board,” said Jean Claude.

He advised the participating students, urging them to prepare for the tournament.

“You won’t always draw the letters you want, but you can always choose how to arrange them. That’s Scrabble. That’s life, too.

“Be patient. Think ahead. Turn a difficult hand into a brilliant play. The board is set, make yours count,” he said.
