The Kebbi State Government has raised the alarm over the emergence of a new terrorist group identified as “Sai Mallam”, warning that the sect is gaining ground in some parts of the state.
This was revealed by State Security Advisor, Danladi Ribah, during a high-level security meeting with the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the North West, Suleiman Mohammed Abdul, held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi.
Ribah said intelligence reports indicate that the group, initially spotted in Zuru in small numbers, has now established a stronger presence in Argungu Local Government Area.
“Without an iota of doubt, ‘Sai Mallam’ adherents are present in large numbers in Argungu. They were earlier detected in Zuru, albeit in smaller numbers,” he said.
He further revealed that the sect was first identified in Sokoto state, where security agents reportedly curtailed its activities before it spread to nearby areas.
The Security Adviser, however, assured residents that the government was working in collaboration with security agencies to contain the menace and prevent its expansion.
According to him, Governor Nasir Idris has advocated logistical, financial and material support to security agencies to enhance ongoing operations against banditry and other criminal networks.
Ribah also highlighted the complex security challenges facing the State, noting that fighters linked to the Lakurawa group infiltrate Kebbi through Sokoto State and Niger Republic, while members of the Mamudawa group gain access through Kwara State and Niger State. He added that bandits often launch attacks from neighboring Zamfara State.
He said: “The Kebbi State Government is aware of the situation and will continue to do everything necessary to safeguard the lives and properties of the people.”
In his remarks, Ambursa District Chief Isa Haruna Rasheed called for more funding for the police to strengthen operations and improve the well-being of personnel amid growing security threats.
This highlights growing concerns about the proliferation of armed groups in the northwest, despite intensifying military and police operations in the region.
