16 people rescued, many more feared trapped when 3-storey building collapsed in Lagos

Emergency response teams launched a large-scale rescue operation on Thursday, after a three-story residential building collapsed in the Alakija area of ​​Lagos State, leaving several people trapped under the rubble.

The building, located on Old Ojo Road near Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite City, collapsed at around 11:37 am, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Emergency crews from Ijegun-Egba Fire Station arrived at the scene within minutes and commenced search and rescue operations.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said at least 16 people had been rescued alive and handed over to medics for treatment.

“The incident involved the collapse of a multi-storey residential building occupied by several residents at the time of the collapse,” the agency said in a statement.

Authorities have not confirmed the total number of passengers or how many people may still be trapped.

Rescue workers continued to comb through the rubble Thursday afternoon in an effort to find and evacuate victims.

Several emergency agencies joined the operation, including the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Police, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Environmental Security Corps, and Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services Controller General Margaret Adeseye said search efforts were still ongoing and promised to provide updated information as the operation progressed.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, and officials have not announced whether an investigation has been launched.

Residents and people who were in the area of ​​the incident gathered around the location as rescue teams tried to reach those who were feared trapped under the rubble.
