Nigeria senior national team coach Eric Chelle is aiming to convince England under-21 international Ethan Nwaneri to change his nationality to Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Nwaneri spent the second half of last season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Marseille but is back at Arsenal, where a decision on his future will be made before the close of the summer transfer window.
Chelle is a big fan of the 19-year-old and sees him as the solution and best option for the team’s number 10 spot. A meeting with his representatives during the Unity Cup was planned in the summer, but his invitation to the English training camp for the World Cup put a stop to the plan.
A new approach is high on Chelle’s priority list but the timing has to be right as the player’s future is yet to be decided following his return from a failed loan spell in France.
Sources close to the coach say he is cautiously optimistic about a productive end to the talks, and will look to use the quartet of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Ola Aina to help elicit a positive response.
