Terrorists, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram group reportedly attacked a school in Lassa town in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred on a busy market day, throwing the community into chaos as heavily armed rebels, said to be wearing military camouflage and riding motorbikes, reportedly stormed the city unchallenged.
Reports emerged, that at the school, the abducted students were sitting the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations and several teachers, with one teacher being killed.
Eyewitnesses said that the terrorists targeted the community while students were taking NECO exams, taking an unspecified number of candidates and teachers to unknown destinations.
Sources said at least one teacher was shot dead in the attack, although the exact number of victims remained unclear as residents continued to search for missing people.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who allege that Nigerian military troops stationed in the area were reportedly on patrol near Uba, about 16 kilometers from Lassa, when the rebels attacked.
“The soldiers were not there when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, shot sporadically and caused panic everywhere. They took away the students who wrote NECO and their teachers,” said an eyewitness.
When journalists contacted the state police command spokesperson, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, he said he was in a meeting and the police were “gathering evidence.”
“I’ll call you back,” he said.
