Canada beat South Africa 1–0 with an injury-time goal to reach the round of 16

Canada secured a narrow 1-0 victory over South Africa in a tense 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 match, clinching their place in the round of 16 thanks to an added-time goal.

The match remained hotly contested for long periods, with both teams showing tactical discipline and resilience in a match that looked destined for extra time.

South Africa put in a solid defensive performance, frustrating Canada’s attacking moves and limiting clear scoring opportunities throughout the match.

Canada dominated possession and continued to push forward, while the South Africans relied on quick counterattacks that at times threatened the North American defense.

Despite the intensity, neither team managed to break the deadlock during regulation time.

Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Canada found a breakthrough in the final moments of the match.

Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 90+2nd minute, converting a crucial late chance to give Canada the winning goal and silence the South African team.

The added-time goal proved decisive, sealing Canada’s passage to the next round.

South Africa will be disappointed to exit the tournament after a disciplined performance that kept them competitive for much of the match.

They defended compactly and limited Canada’s chances, but ultimately fell short in the final minutes.

Canada will now face the winner of the round of 32 tie between the Netherlands and Morocco in the round of 16 as they continue their World Cup campaign.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2026 tournament features a newly expanded format, introducing the round of 32 following FIFA’s decision to increase the participating teams from 32 to 48.
