Controversial Nigerian disc jockey and TikTok personality, Ademola Abiodun, popularly known as DJ Chicken, has been arraigned before a court in Ogba, Lagos, for allegedly threatening the life of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
The social media personality was brought before magistrate MF Onamusi on Friday on three charges bordering on alleged threat to murder, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and offenses under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
The charges stemmed from a viral video he posted on social media while commenting on the 2027 presidential election. Prosecutors said the video contained statements interpreted as a threat against Seyi Tinubu, prompting the Lagos state government to initiate criminal proceedings despite the defendant’s subsequent retraction.
Viral video sparks legal action
According to the indictment, DJ Chicken uploaded the video while discussing the upcoming presidential election. Speaking in Yoruba, he reportedly declared that President Bola Tinubu would not win the election and added that if he did, he would kill Seyi Tinubu.
The video quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing widespread condemnation from the public who described the comments as reckless and disturbing.
Prosecutors argued that the remarks constituted a criminal threat and contravened the provisions of both the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015, and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
DJ Chicken retracted the statement
Following the backlash, the content creator posted another video in which he retracted the comments and insisted that they were never intended as an actual threat.
He said the statement was made simply to gain attention and generate engagement on his social media platforms, claiming that he had no intention of harming Seyi Tinubu.
Despite public apologies and clarifications, the Lagos State government proceeded with the legal proceedings.
The charges before the court
The prosecution brought three charges against the accused.
The first charge alleges that DJ Chicken posted a video containing a threat to kill Seyi Tinubu through his social media accounts, contrary to Section 232 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
The second charge accuses him of transmitting a grossly offensive and threatening message via a computer network, in contravention of Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
The third charge alleges that his conduct was likely to cause a breach of the peace and was intended to intimidate or embarrass Seyi Tinubu, contrary to section 168(d) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
DJ Chicken pleaded not guilty to all three charges when they were read to him in court.
The court grants bail
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, Magistrate Onamusi admitted the accused to post bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the same sum.
The court, however, ordered that he be detained at Kirikiri Correctional Center until his bail conditions are met.
The case was adjourned to August 3, 2026 for further proceedings.
The lawyer expects release on Monday
DJ Chicken’s lawyer Rotimi Stephen confirmed after the court hearing that his client had been granted bail.
Speaking in a video posted on his Instagram page, Stephen said securing bail was difficult due to the identity of the complainant in the case.
He revealed that the court relied on section 115(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) before granting bail.
According to him, the bail conditions have not yet been finalized, which means that the author of the content will remain temporarily in custody.
Stephen expressed optimism that the conditions will be met by Monday, allowing his client to regain his freedom. He also thanked the supporters who attended the proceedings to show solidarity with DJ Chicken.
Case updated
The case was adjourned until August 3, 2026, when the Magistrates Court is expected to continue hearing the three charges.
DJ Chicken remains in custody pending finalization of his bail conditions.
