Well-known talented singer, British pop force Charli XCX, returns with a contemplative new single, “Camera.”

It is the fourth track on his album Music, Fashion, Film, following “Rock Music”, “SS26” and “Wink Wink”. While here he pulls everything back after the club-ready pandemonium of Brat. So “Camera” feels more like a somber stomach check than another disco anthem.

The production trades its normal strong electronic feel for something guitar-driven and mid-tempo. There’s room in the mix that wasn’t quite on Brat. The instrumental is restrained enough so that each lyric actually achieves success.

His singing is vague, unbridled, more internal monologue than presentation. At 34, he doubts whether to pursue acting and music as he voices his choices out loud. This is not the kind of skepticism he usually brings to the fore.

Lyrically, “Camera” is about the struggle of being looked at and evaluated when trying something new. The hook keeps repeating how “it makes me feel,” almost as if she’s still thinking about the answer in real time. It’s a bit of a statement, more of a spiral, and that’s what makes it seem honest.
