Bandits kill eight farmers and wound five others in the Sokoto attack

No fewer than eight farmers were killed and five others injured when suspected bandits attacked Gandhi community in Rabah Local Government Area of ​​Sokoto State on Sunday.

The attackers reportedly stormed the community at around 3pm and opened fire on farmers, forcing residents to flee for safety.

The incident was confirmed by Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, who said the command was aware of the attack.

Rufai, who spoke to reporters by phone, said eight farmers were killed while five others suffered gunshot wounds.

He added that the command is still gathering details about the incident and will issue an official statement after completing the assessment.

“Yes, we are aware of the attack. Eight farmers were killed while five others were injured. We will make this public once we finish gathering the information,” the police spokesperson said.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers arrived in the community in the afternoon and immediately started shooting at people.

The source said the attack had left residents terrified, especially farmers who were carrying out their activities in the community when the gunmen struck.

The resident said the attack may have been carried out in retaliation for recent operations by security agencies against bandit groups operating in the area.

“We believe this is a retaliatory attack because some members of the group have been killed by security personnel in recent days,” the source said.

The latest incident has heightened fears among residents of Ghandi and nearby communities, where farmers have continued to face threats from armed groups.

The attack also renewed concerns about the safety of farmers whose businesses are critical to food production in the state.
