The five best footballers in the history of Mozambique

For a country of around 33 million people, Mozambique has a huge football heritage. Their biggest export was once considered the best player Africa has ever produced, and the modern Mambas now have men in the Premier League and Champions League.

That is part of the reason why Mozambican fans study the Football betting odds at Premier Bet so closely every weekend: there is almost always a compatriot worth following somewhere in Europe. Here are the five best, with the exception that the two best were sent to Portugal in colonial times and never wore the Mozambique shirt.

1. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira

Born in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, in 1942, Eusébio was scouted at Sporting de Lourenço Marques and signed for Benfica in 1960. What followed was one of the great careers of this sport: 473 goals in 440 official matches for Benfica, 11 Portuguese league titles and the 1962 European Cup. He won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and finished as top scorer in the 1966 World Cup with nine goals, while Portugal took third place, finishing his international career with 41 goals in 64 international matches. Two European Golden Boots, in 1968 and 1973, underline the coherence.

2. Mario Coluna

Also born in Maputo, in 1935, Coluna was nicknamed “O Sacred Monster”, for the authority he brought to the Benfica midfield. Over 16 seasons he played 525 official matches and scored 127 goals, and scored in Benfica’s two European Cup finals, against Barcelona in 1961 and Real Madrid in 1962. He played in five European finals in total. For Portugal he made 57 international appearances, scoring eight goals and captaining the team to third place in 1966. He later returned home to coach Mozambique and serve as sports minister.

3. tico-tico

Manuel José Luís Bucuane is Mozambique’s record goalscorer, with 30 goals in 94 appearances over a career that included the 1996, 1998 and 2010 African Cup of Nations. After starting out at Desportivo de Maputo and spending three seasons at Estrela da Amadora in Portugal, he made a name for himself in South Africa. His spells at Jomo Cosmos, SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United yielded 108 league goals, which remains the Premier Soccer League record. In between there was a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Mutiny in the MLS.

4. Reinildo Mandava

The best Mozambican of the modern era. Born in Beira in 1994, the left-back came through Benfica’s reserve team and Belenenses before moving to Lille, where he won Ligue 1 in 2021 and became the league’s team of the season. Atlético Madrid signed him in January 2022 and he made 103 appearances in Spain, then joined Sunderland in 2025 to fulfill his ambition of playing in the Premier League. He is the captain of the Mambas and his added-time equalizer against Ghana at AFCON 2023 is among the national team’s most celebrated goals.

5. Simão Mate Junior

Simão, a combative defensive midfielder from Maputo, spent five seasons at Panathinaikos, making 112 appearances and winning the Greek title in 2009-10, before moving to Shandong Luneng in China. Three years at Levante from 2013 gave him a sustained career in La Liga, a rarity for a Mozambican, and he went on to play in Qatar and Japan with Al Ahli and Vegalta Sendai. He was a central figure in the team that reached the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

The future of football in Mozambique

Progress is finally coming. At AFCON 2025 in Morocco, the Mambas beat Gabon 3-2 for their first win in the tournament’s history, ending a 16-match winless streak spanning four decades, and reached the last 16 for the first time before Nigeria won 4-0 in Fez. They are coached by Chiquinho Conde, a former international, and are built around a young core. Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo is the clearest sign of change: a Mozambican breaking into a Champions League team rather than simply arriving in Europe.

The national Moçambola, led by Black Bulls, Costa do Sol and Ferroviário de Maputo, continues to feed that pipeline. Mozambique has never lacked talent. The difference now is that it is being seen more.
