FRSC TOW TEAM RECOVERS STOLEN VEHICLE IN ABUJA AND HANDS IT OVER TO POLICE FOR INVESTIGATION

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded another significant breakthrough in its ongoing operations to improve safety on Nigerian roads, as its tow truck team in the Federal Capital Territory recovered a stolen Hyundai vehicle in Abuja and subsequently handed it over to the police for further investigation.

The red Hyundai vehicle, with license plate YAB 789 AM, was recovered at around 02.00 on Tuesday 1 September 2026 by a tow truck team from the RS7.1 FCT Sector Command in Wuye, along the highway leading to Area 1. The recovery followed the team’s operational activities in the area, after which a document found inside the vehicle provided a lead that allowed the owner to be traced and contacted.

Following the recovery, the Sector Commander, RS7.1 FCT Sector Command, Corps Commander Tijjani Iliyasu, immediately activated the appropriate inter-agency process by inviting the FCT Police Command for formal handover of the vehicle for further investigation. The vehicle was subsequently handed over by DCC Sabitu Abdu, fcai, Deputy Corps Commander (Operations), to CSP Nimyel Ponfa, DPO Wuse Division, who received it on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command.

Commenting on the development, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the recovery highlights the importance of technology, vigilance and collaboration in protecting lives and properties on Nigerian roads. He stressed that the Corps will continue to strengthen its vehicle identification and intelligence capabilities, while maintaining close collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies whenever operational circumstances warrant.

He further noted that the development is consistent with the administration’s deliberate effort to reposition the FRSC as a more technologically driven, responsive and security-conscious institution. The Corps’ vehicle identification infrastructure, particularly the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), has increasingly become an important tool in supporting vehicle verification and national security operations. Under the current administration, 81 stolen vehicles have been recovered through the NVIS portal, demonstrating the security value of the Corps’ vehicle cyber architecture.

The Corps therefore reiterates that its mandate to save lives on Nigerian roads is inseparable from the broader responsibility to ensure that the road environment remains safe, secure and adequately regulated. The Corps will continue to leverage technology, field operations, intelligence and strategic partnerships to identify suspicious vehicles, support investigations and prevent criminal exploitation of the nation’s road transportation system.

To this end, the Corps Marshal commends the FCT RS7.1 Sector Command operational team for its vigilance and professionalism and appreciates the FCT Police Command for its continued cooperation, while assuring the public that such collaboration will remain central in its commitment to safer roads, safer vehicles and a safer Nigeria.
