Police in Ondo have arrested a suspect in connection with an alcoholic drink that killed 24 people

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the production of alcoholic beverages that led to the deaths of at least 24 people in Odigbo Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Ondo Police Chief DSP Abayomi Jimoh made the disclosure in a statement to journalists on Sunday evening.

Jimoh noted that the suspect is currently assisting police with investigations, while a substance suspected to be methanol was also discovered and has undergone further investigation and forensic examination to determine its exact composition and determine its possible link to the reported deaths.

He revealed that the victim’s body was undergoing medical and forensic procedures, and it was hoped that the results would provide further medical evidence regarding the true cause of death.

According to him, operatives of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have also arrested 14 suspects, including alleged sellers and consumers of these drinks and concoctions at different locations in the area.

A police spokesperson revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, has directed continued enforcement against the production, distribution and sale of unapproved, adulterated or dangerous alcoholic substances across the state.

The Ondo State Government on Friday confirmed that the death toll from suspected consumption of contaminated alcoholic beverages in Araromi-Obu and other communities in Odigbo Local Government Area has risen to 24 people.

State Health Commissioner Banji Awolowo-Ajaka revealed that the total number of cases recorded was 60.
