The increasing use of AI in Canadian courtrooms creates a divide – Winnipeg

Canadian courts are seeing increased use of artificial intelligence, which is providing access to justice while taking away valuable work experience from law students, experts say.

Tom Macintosh Zheng, co-founder of Courtready, a website that offers tools and databases that advise companies on AI, said so far the number of AI uses has increased from 104 in 2025 to 142 in 2026.

“They use AI because they can’t afford lawyers,” Macintosh Zheng said, noting that more than 80 percent of people using this technology represent themselves.
