Nig government declares Thursday a public holiday to mark 66th anniversary of independence

Abuja (Core Reporters) The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the celebration of the nation’s 66th anniversary of independence.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the statement on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulates all Nigerians at home and abroad on this year’s celebration of the 66th anniversary of the independence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dr Tunji-Ojo said our warmth, welcoming spirit and love, as well as the abundant wealth inherent in our human capital and the richness of our land, make Nigeria indisputably the most prosperous black nation in the world being the pride of Africa and a beacon of hope for the Renewed Agenda of Hope of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
According to the Hon. Minister, peace and stability are necessary conditions for the development of any nation. He therefore called on Nigerians to emulate the founding fathers of the nation in their love of country and build a Nigeria of our dreams that our children will be proud of, so that a new Nigeria is achievable.
“As we celebrate the 66th year of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and that our diversity is our strength, and that our collective determination remains the foundation on which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
The Minister reassures that this administration, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, will ensure a better Nigeria for all citizens, as a fitting tribute to our heroes of the past.
He urged citizens to use the Independence celebration as an opportunity to demonstrate the values of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
