NIMET partners with 3IS on AI chatbot for climate alerts

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with 3IS to improve access to weather and climate information through artificial intelligence-powered chatbots.

This partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the ANTICIPA project in Nigeria.

This project is currently being piloted in Sokoto State. It uses an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot to turn weather forecasts into simple and practical advice for the public.

This system is designed to help people understand weather information and prepare for possible climate-related hazards.

NiMet Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, said technology could help make climate information more accessible to the people who need it.

The agency said the project supports the goal of providing early warning to communities that may be impacted by dangerous weather and climate events.

The use of WhatsApp-based chatbots can make it easier for people to receive important weather information using a platform that is already widely used by Nigerians.

This partnership is an example of how artificial intelligence can be used for practical purposes beyond entertainment and business.

NiMet and 3IS are expected to continue developing this project as part of efforts to improve climate communications and early warning systems in Nigeria.
