66th Independence Anniversary: Tinubu to address Nigerians on October 1

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 7am, as part of activities marking the country’s 66th anniversary of independence.

The national broadcast, which is expected to be broadcast across major television and radio networks, was announced in a statement released Wednesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement directed all television and radio stations, as well as other electronic media, to connect with the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for broadcast.

The speech will be the central national pledge on Independence Day as the country reflects on 66 years of self-rule and the journey since independence in 1960. Project Reports

FG adopts a low-key celebration

The federal government had earlier announced that this year’s independence anniversary would be celebrated with a low-key programme, with the emphasis on reflecting on the country’s journey, the sacrifices of its founding fathers and the challenges and opportunities facing the nation.

The program is coordinated by an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

At the inauguration of the committee, the Federal Government said the anniversary will provide an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of nationalists who worked for Nigeria’s independence, as well as the achievements since October 1, 1960.

The government also said the occasion will provide a way to highlight ongoing efforts to reposition the country through economic and institutional reforms in the context of the prevailing socioeconomic challenges.

The anniversary is being celebrated under the theme “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.”

The theme places the focus of this year’s commemoration on the government’s reform agenda and its stated goal of leading the country towards greater economic stability, growth and shared prosperity.

The activities precede the President’s broadcast

The nationwide broadcast is the culmination of a series of activities organized by the federal government to mark the anniversary.

The program began with a global press conference on September 24, followed by a special Juma’at service on September 25 and an interfaith religious service on September 27.

A public Independence Day conference is also scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, ahead of the President’s national broadcast on October 1.

The federal government said the activities are intended not only to commemorate the country’s achievement of independence, but also to encourage reflection on Nigeria’s development trajectory and the responsibilities of citizens and leaders in building a stronger nation.

The 66th anniversary also offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, particularly the progress made since the return to constitutional democracy in 1999.

Tinubu’s message comes amid the debate on reform

President Tinubu’s speech comes at a time when his administration continues to champion and implement a series of economic reforms, as Nigerians continue to grapple with the effects and implications of such measures.

During a recent Independence Day Juma’at function in Abuja, where he was represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, the President urged Nigerians to remain confident and support the reforms implemented by his administration.

Tinubu said Nigeria was on the path to greater development and prosperity, while acknowledging the challenges facing citizens.

It is therefore expected that the President’s Independence Day broadcast will provide another opportunity for the administration to communicate directly with citizens as the country enters another year of nationhood.

However, the Presidency did not release details on the specific issues or policy areas that will be addressed.

The broadcast could, however, provide the President with a platform to reflect on the country’s progress since independence, acknowledge the challenges facing Nigerians and outline the administration’s priorities as it continues with its reform agenda.

Media organizations to link the broadcast

In its announcement, the Presidency specifically asked television, radio and other electronic media stations to join the services of the NTA and FRCN networks for live broadcasting.

The directive aims to ensure nationwide access to the President’s message through the national broadcast infrastructure.

The agreement also highlights the traditional role of the presidential Independence Day speech as a major national communications point, bringing the President’s message directly to citizens across the country.

With October 1 declared a public holiday by the Federal Government, Nigerians are expected to observe the anniversary through various official, religious, civic and private activities.

Nigeria at 66

Nigeria became an independent nation on October 1, 1960, ending British colonial rule and beginning a new chapter in the country’s political history.

Sixty-six years later, the anniversary comes with a renewed focus on the country’s economic transformation, security, democratic development, national unity and the need to translate reform measures into better living conditions for citizens.

For the Tinubu administration, the anniversary also provides an opportunity to communicate its assessment of the country’s progress under the Renewed Hope Agenda and explain the direction of its policies in the period ahead.

For citizens, the occasion remains an opportunity to reflect on the achievements, challenges and possibilities that have shaped Nigeria’s journey since independence.

President Tinubu’s speech, scheduled for 7am on Thursday, October 1, 2026, will therefore serve as the administration’s main national message to Nigerians as the country celebrates its 66th anniversary of independence.
