The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called for a thorough investigation into the Nigerian Air Force plane crash in Ondo State on Monday.

The Sultan, in a statement issued by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of his media team on Monday, described the accident involving a NAF ATR-42 aircraft as a “deeply unfortunate national tragedy”.

The plane reportedly had 25 passengers and seven crew members on board when the crash occurred in Ondo State.

Expressing sorrow over the incident, the Sultan apologized to the families of those affected, stressing that the loss of military and civilian personnel was particularly painful at a time when the country was battling numerous national and security challenges.

The retired Nigerian Army general said the circumstances of the incident must be thoroughly investigated to determine the cause and prevent a recurrence.

He said: “Incidents like this national disaster must be thoroughly investigated with the aim of knowing the cause so as to prevent it from happening again in the future.”

The Sultan underlined that lessons must be learned from the tragedy, urging the competent authorities to adopt all necessary measures to strengthen the safety of personnel and vehicles employed in the service of the nation.

He described the incident as a national disaster involving officers, male and female airmen of the Nigerian Air Force, as well as civilians.

Abubakar prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the crash and asked Almighty Allah to grant their families the strength and courage to bear the loss.

The Sultan also commiserated with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the entire leadership, officers, airmen and women of the Nigerian Air Force over the tragedy.
