2027: Obidient lament the spread of political violence, claiming double standards

The Obidient Movement has accused security agencies of applying double standards in handling alleged political violence in some parts of the country.

The movement also said that alleged attackers of opposition supporters could get away with impunity, while those who reported the incidents risked arrest.

The allegation, contained in a statement released on Monday, raises new questions about police neutrality and the protection of opposition parties as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.

The movement cited incidents in Enugu, Edo, Delta and Benue states, arguing that failure to impartially investigate threats and attacks could undermine public trust in security agencies.

The statement said suspects arrested over an attack on members of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 12, 2026, had been released, while the person who recorded and reported the incident had been arrested.

The group, however, did not provide further details in the statement to establish the circumstances of the alleged release and arrest.

The movement also cited reports of violence in Enugu over the weekend, claiming that armed political thugs disrupted NDC activities with gunfire, leaving several supporters injured, with one death reportedly recorded.

The movement challenged the inspector general of police, Tunji Disu, to investigate the allegations and establish whether officers responded adequately to the incidents.

The APC and security agencies had not responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

Apart from Enugu, the movement has accused the APC Chairman in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, of threatening to use AK-47 rifles against anyone in the way of achieving the party’s target of 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu.

He said security agencies had not responded adequately to the reported threat.

In Delta State, the group said a business belonging to an NDC member was sealed following a peaceful pro-NDC march.

He further alleged that Sochi Okolo, NDC member and Victor Ochei Campaign Council member, was taken from his home and detained by the police following his defection from the APC to the NDC.

Okolo was identified as a former senior media aide to the Executive Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area.

In Benue State, the movement has called for an investigation into the reported attack and subsequent death of Igbu Terhemen, chairman of the NDC’s Fiidi Ward Council.

It said the incident reflected a larger pattern of attacks against its members in the state.

The group warned that failure to transparently investigate incidents could embolden political actors and encourage retaliatory action.

He urged security agencies to protect citizens regardless of their political affiliation and ensure that allegations of intimidation, assault and threats are investigated on their merits.
