The Minister of Finance, Oyedele, lacks the education to understand the -ADC subsidy policy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has questioned the educational background of Finance Minister, Taiwo Oyedele, arguing that he lacks the appropriate training to assess Nigeria’s controversial fuel subsidy policy.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he criticized the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount.

Abdullahi argues that fuel subsidies are an ideological and economic issue that requires more understanding than just accounting skills.

“I’m not saying Oyedele is incompetent, but I don’t think he has the right education because the subsidy issue is ideological, and we have to understand where you are coming from,” he said.

But the ADC spokesperson acknowledged the minister’s intelligence, and stressed that his criticism was aimed at the perspective of Oyedele’s economic policy approach.

“He is a smart person, and I respect him for that. However, the way accountants view the economy is different from economists, and vice versa,” said Abdullahi.

His statement followed the Federal Government’s announcement of a temporary discount on fuel sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for 30 days.

This policy sparked debate over whether this price reduction meant a return to fuel subsidies, which had previously been removed by the Tinubu administration.

Abdullahi stated that understanding the ideological basis of subsidies is very important in assessing government intervention.
