The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed that the highly anticipated 2024 Womenβs Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) may be postponed.
Β
Originally slated to take place in Morocco in 2024, the WAFCONβs schedule remains uncertain as CAF struggles to finalize a suitable timeframe for the event.
Β
Speaking to BBC reporters, CAFβs General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba acknowledged the challenges in accommodating the competition within an already congested calendar.
Β
βWe are supposed to play this year but we have teams engaged in the Olympics, so we have to find another date,β Mosengo-Omba explained to BBC Sport Africa.
βWe are talking with Uefa, because most of the players are playing in Europe, the European Club Association and also with Fifa in order to find [a] suitable date.β
Additionally, the 2025 AFCON faces a potential delay of six months due to FIFAβs introduction of a new inter-club FIFA World Cup, slated for the same summer as the continental tournament.
βFor the men, we need to make sure that the dates that weβll be choosing will be in the interests of the players,β said the Swiss-Congolese, highlighting issues around the workload of the continentβs elite players.
βFor this we need to balance different aspects and also discuss with our partners and then we complete [the dates]. Scheduling is a nightmare for everybody,β He said.
