The coach of one of the fastest-growing teams in Africa, the Central African Republic (CAR), Raoul Savoy, says he is open to becoming the next coach of the Nigerian senior national team. Own goal Nigeria.com reports.
The Super Eagles are currently on the lookout for a new coach following the departure of Finidi George after a poor showing during the recently concluded 2026 World Cup qualifiers where they drew 1-1 with South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic.
Savoy, who saw his side return to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Chad after losing 4-3 to Ghana, wonders why the Super Eagles are currently struggling in their group despite the array of stars in the squad.
He said he can make the team, which is currently fifth in its six-team group for World Cup qualifying, one of the best on the continent if he is given the job, but said he will not apply for the job because he is currently employed, but if he is approached he will be open to talking about it.
“I don’t know why the national team is not playing well. Maybe the foreign coaches they are hiring don’t know Africa well and maybe they are not very good for the team,” he said in an interview broadcast on Brila FM.
“I am sure I can tell you now that if I take this team with my coaching staff, we will do very good things and maybe we will be one of the best teams in Africa again. I don’t know why they made that strange decision, they took some coaches that I don’t know, but after trying, they left. If you give me the team, I can promise that I will make Nigeria a great team in Africa.
The coach who led the Central African Republic to a shock 1-0 win over Nigeria in Lagos in 2021 further said: βI canβt apply when Iβm under contract with another national team, itβs not fair, but in football normally when you want someone and youβre sure that this guy or the coaching staff is the best for your team, you can just make a call and then we can talk, but I donβt want to talk when Iβm under contract, itβs not fair.β
Goodbye Emmanuel
