Court grants conditional release to former energy minister Sale Mamman

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday granted bail to former Power Minister, Saleh Mamman.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday charged the former minister with an alleged N33 billion fraud.

He was charged with 12 counts of fraud and money laundering.

The EFCC accused Mamman of conspiring with ministry staff in charge of the accounts of the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydropower projects to divert N22 billion.

At Friday’s hearing, the defendant was granted bail of Rp10 billion with two sureties of the same amount.

The judge ordered that the sureties must be owners of land worth N750 million each in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They are also expected to provide a three-year tax exemption certificate, a wealth declaration, a certified bank statement, and a recent passport photo.

Alternatively, the guarantor can submit a bank guarantee or bond worth N10 billion.

The judge ordered Mamman to surrender his international passport to the court clerk for verification before being released from custody.

He adjourned the matter until September 25 for further hearing.
