Former Nigeria senior national team coach Gernot Rohr says the team is struggling at the moment because the new players have not yet adapted to the team.
Nigeria have been drawn into Group D alongside Benin Republic, Libya and Rwanda and Rohr, who led Benin Republic to a 2-1 win over Nigeria in World Cup qualifying last month, says Nigeria remain favourites in the group.
“You can see that the team is going through a tough time but you can’t say that they don’t have quality players. They have players who can decide the match in their favour and that makes them a tough team to beat and that’s why they are the favourites to go through the group,” he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
On the team’s recent poor results, the coach said that the team’s approach in the last few games has not been better as the incorporation of new players has not gone as expected. “I think they have not been able to incorporate new players to create a style and identity. So they are still relying on the players I worked with the most after two years and a lot of good young players have come in who have had difficulties,” he said.
“In the last game, when we beat them, I think the missing trio of Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong did not help them. They can make the difference with their determination, passion and desire. That really pushes the team,” concluded the coach.
