Security Council LIVE: Ambassadors commemorate 9/11 with counter-terrorism push on AI and drones


The Security Council met to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, with a briefing on counter-terrorism as ambassadors reviewed threats that have changed dramatically since resolution 1373 established the council’s counter-terrorism machinery in 2001. Ambassadors were expected to focus attention on militants’ increasing use of artificial intelligence, drones and encrypted platforms for recruiting and planning attacks. Members will also adopt a presidential statement – ​​the Council’s first on terrorism in five years – after reportedly tense discussions over references to specific groups and new technological language.
