A court order remanded Sowore in Kuje prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, ordered the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to be detained at the Kuje Correctional Center until Wednesday.

Chief Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order after Sowore’s bail was revoked last week.

The court decision came after Justice Umar rejected Sowore’s application asking the judge to recuse himself from the case, which involved Department of State Services allegations regarding a public statement in which Sowore allegedly called President Bola Tinubu a criminal.

In response to the order, the human rights activist remained defiant, stating that his detention would not stop his activism, and that he would use his time in detention to continue mobilizing society.

“I will go to prison to continue mobilizing our people. The court was told by the prosecutor that they should insist on sending me to Kuje Prison until Wednesday.

“I came prepared. I even brought a prison bag. All this happened for a good reason. One has to make sacrifices that are beneficial for this country,” he said.

According to the activist, his recent absence from court, which triggered the bail revocation, was due to a legal consultation.

He pointed out that Justice Umar ordered the detention for the sole absence, even though his new principal counsel, Olumide-Fusika, SAN, officially informed the court that Sowore was away to consult with his legal team.

“I don’t need to say that I am the least disturbed by this development. Prison has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” he added.
