Anyoku, Nwachukwu updated calls for restructuring, constitutional review

Duo former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Head of Emeka Anyoku and Foreign Minister once, General Ike Nwachukwu (RETD), on Tuesday renewed the call for restructuring and constitutional review to overcome the challenges of the country.

They made a call during the “Head of the 14th Head of Emeka Ayaoku Lecture Series about good governance,” which was held at Enugu.

Nwachukwu, who is the chairman at the event, said he had recommended Nigeria’s restructuring to become the right federation and brought governance closer to the people.

He emphasized the need for Nigeria to have a true constitution of a person made by ethnic nationality and interest group.

The former minister showed that the 1999 constitution refrained and the harmonious co-existence of the Nigerians.

He said: “The failure of government in Nigeria was proven in a decrease in the capacity of political leaders to recognize systemic problems and apply the steps needed to overcome them.

“I support respect for the rule of law, the need for honest and independent justice, military service, police and intelligence that are more effective and responsive, the creation of state police and local police for our community.”

Anyaoku, who aligned him with Nwachukwu with a good government, said he consistently encouraged the original constitution that discussed the country’s pluralism.

He added that the current constitution did not discuss the country’s pluralism.

Anyaoku said: “I am 92 years old and I have privileges to live through the history of Nigeria, and I regret that Nigeria is still a country and has not become a nation.

“We are still struggling to become a nation because of some of the challenges we face now, I believe, can be managed better if we are a nation.

“Nigeria is still a pluralistic country, and pluralistic countries exist throughout the world. Those who have succeeded in surviving remain an individual political entity.

“They are also those who have discussed their pluralism through the original federal constitution.

“Pluralistic countries that failed to overcome their pluralism through the original federal constitution have been destroyed, such as Sudan, which were destroyed into Sudan and South Sudan.”

Nonagenary, however, emphasized that good governance is possible in Nigeria only if the fundamental which is a constitution, is permitted and encourages good governance.

“The constitution that we have now put at the top of the country and joint units depends on it to survive, unlike what we have in the Obafemi Awolowo, Michael Okpara, and others.

“We developed faster in the first six years of our independence because we have the original federal constitution that allows four regions to take care of internal development, social facilities, education, health, and internal security,” recalled the former Komonwealth clerk.
