Application of drug laws. The head of the NHRC is asking for the collaboration of the interested parties to prevent torture

Abuja (basic reporter) as a World Cup commemorates the international drug day, the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr. Tony Ojukwu (San) has invited agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for Commissions, NDLEA, the Nigerian Correctional Center, (NCS), And the other drug agencies to work together for SLR Work) eradicate torture and other punitive measures in the application of drug laws.

Ojukwu, made the call on Thursday 26 June, while he spoke in a dialogue session organized by the Commission to mark the 2025 world drug day with the theme that protects dignity, supporting justice: a joint dialogue on the reforms of drug policy and the prevention of torture in Nigeria.

He said that the protection of the dignity of all people extends to people arrested or intended for the suspicion of drug -related crimes and detainees is very important.

According to dr. Ojukwu, the prevention of torture is not only a legal obligation, but a moral imperative that requires a coherent political and adequate formation of the police and law enforcement agencies, among other efforts.

He said: “From the depths of my experience, which extends on the incessant research of justice, service and dignity for each Nigerian, it is with deep respect and unrivaled commitment for the cause that has collected us here that I join you today, even if virtually an event. The international day in support of the victims of torture, is not simply a convergence of agendas;

“The National Human Rights Commission holds the themes of today’s dialogue not only as sent, but as the foundation of a right society. For many, these may seem to be disparate causes. But where we find ourselves as NHRI, having witnessed the raw impact on the life of ordinary life.

“They converge in the cries of vulnerables, in the shadows of detention centers, and in the profound human suffering that requires our immediate and empathic response. This joint commemoration presents an opportunity for Nigeria and its institutions to make reality, because of reality, to a dentane, with reality, due to reality.

“The NHRC is a reliable, transparent and oriented partner to the results; your partnership in this cause is an investment in the very fabric of human rights in Nigeria, with tangible yields in saved lives, restored dignity and a more right society.

“For our leaders of dedicated civil society and human rights defenders, your passion is our engine that must be channeled into concrete collaborative actions. And for people who have survived torture, dependence, incarceration, your voices are our compass, your resilience inspires our mandate. Your dignity is not negotiable.

“The way to go is undoubtedly demanding, long and arduous. But with our collective and unwavering commitment for human dignity, led by tests and pushed by empathy, we can and we must protect dignity and make justice for the Nigerians. The Commission reacts its total commitment to work with all stakeakers to make our human rights our laws on drug practices and our justice practices. The redDirement not only the commemoration, but I can’t wait to transform the transformative results that I know emerge today from our discussions, “concluded Ojukwu.
