Presient the supervisor of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastore Tunde Bakare, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a state burial to the former president Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a rare show of honor and station.
Bakare, a former running companion in Bohari in the 2011 presidential elections, also paid tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on the same day as the former president.
Speaking during his speech on the state of the nation on Sunday, entitled “A great change in the national focus”, Bakare said that the simultaneous disappearance of Bohari and Awujale was not a simple coincidence but a symbolic moment for the democratic journey of Nigeria.
The cleric revealed that the deceased Awujale, despite being a traditional non -partisan sovereign, played a fundamental role in the historical fusion of opposition parties in 2013, which gave birth to the Congress All Progressiveives (APC) and in the end led to the victory of Buhari in the general elections of 2015.
“Without the fundamental intervention of Awujale, the APC would not have emerged,” said Bakare.
“Kabiyesi convened a critical meeting at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, where he mediated the political alliance that transformed the Nigerian political space.
It was a paternal figure who has always acted in the national interest. “
Bakare described Oba adapta as an elderly statesman whose wisdom and patriotism transcended ethnic and political lines.
“Until the end, a mentor, a loyal friend, a patriot and a rare gift for this nation, remained,” he added.
Reflecting on the political inheritance of Buhari, Bakare described the deceased president as “one of the most tolerant and equivalent leaders” he had ever met.
He recalled how Buhari insisted to keep him as his racing partner in the 2011 elections under the deceased congress for progressive change (CPC), despite the intense pressure of doing differently.
He said that Buhari has shattered many stereotypes twice by appointing pastors-which went in and subsequently, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo-as candidates vice-presidential, then dispelled the accusations of religious intolerance.
“Where others have seen religious fundamentalism, I saw a man who has opened the doors twice to Christian leaders in governance. Buhari has shown that faith should never be a leadership barrier,” Bakare said
The cleric also praised Buhari for leaving behind reference political as the not too young to manage the disability and amendment of the electoral act, which according to him authorized Nigerian youth and the groups marginalized to participate in governance.
“These men have left a legacy that reads strong and clear: the Africa giant cannot be on one leg. We cannot build Nigeria as a single party state. A vibrant opposition is vital for our democracy,” he said.
Bakare asked unity and inclusiveness, warning that Nigeria could not afford to return to divisive policy.
“We have to rely on the inheritance of these great men. Their lives teach us that good government does not thrive in polarization but in the fusion of different ideas and identities.”
He concluded by urged the Nigerians to reflect on the contributions of the deceased statesmen, saying that their departure reports a change in national consciousness and an invitation to action for the next generation of leaders.
“Calligraphy is on the wall. The witness has been overcome. We have to raise ourselves to the occasion,” Bakare said.
