CAA Championships 2026: Tobi Amusan wins gold as Nigeria dominates women’s 100m hurdles in Accra

Nigeria’s medal tally at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra received a major boost on Wednesday when Tobi Amusan claimed gold in the women’s 100m hurdles final, while compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo claimed bronze to complete a memorable outing for the Nigerian team.

The current world record holder put in a commanding performance in the final to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal of the championship, reaffirming her dominance on the continent after qualifying fastest in the heats with a time of 12.82 seconds.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller prevented Nigeria from sweeping the top two positions by taking the silver medal, while Tabugbo impressed strongly by claiming her first senior individual international medal for Nigeria.

The final, however, was briefly overshadowed by technical difficulties at the stadium, as the timing system failed, causing delays in the organizers’ publication of the official race times.

Amusan’s win marks a successful return to continental competition for the Nigerian star and further underlines her status as one of Africa’s best track athletes. Her victory also continued Nigeria’s strong performance in Accra, where the country increased its medal haul in athletics during the early stages of the championships.

Earlier in the competition, the Nigerian team had already opened its medal account in the women’s discus event, while several other athletes advanced to the finals in the sprint and field events.

Later, attention turns to the women’s 100m final, where Rosemary Chukwuma is among the Nigerian athletes expected to compete for podium positions as the Nigerian team continues its quest for more medals in Ghana.
