CAF helped South Africa qualify for the World Cup ahead of the Super Eagles – Rohr

Former Nigeria senior national team coach Gernot Rohr has explained why his team, Benin Republic, failed to qualify for the World Cup like the Nigerian Super Eagles, reports OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Benin Republic finished third in the group behind Nigeria and South Africa, who finished first to secure the group’s automatic berth to the world cup, while Nigeria picked a playoff spot but lost to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the final.

Rohr, assessing his team’s failure, said CAF’s decision to move the home matches of two teams in the group to Lesotho and Zimbabwe gave South Africa an advantage.

“South Africa played only three away games against Nigeria, Rwanda and my team played on a neutral ground. The rest of the games were at home, which is shocking because it gives them an advantage,” the coach said.

“You have to wonder how the CAF made such a decision without considering the undue advantage it could give to South Africa. In the end they took advantage of it well,” said the coach, quoted by the Benin Republic press.
