Let’s be honest: keeping food cold outside in the summer is one of those things we all know we have to do right… and then the sun comes out, the patio fills up, and the potato salad has been sitting on the table for two hours. Good grief!

Health Canada estimates that approximately 4 million Canadians contract foodborne illnesses each year, and summer is the peak period of risk for these illnesses. Bacteria can multiply in just 20 minutes after food reaches the “danger zone” between 4°C and 60°C. When the temperature outside is above 30°C (which is basically every afternoon in July), you only have an hour before your perishable food has to be thrown away.

Good news: You don’t need to overhaul your hosting routine. You just need the right tool for the right day. Here are the six I recommend for every summer scenario.

1. Beautiful Side Table Cooler That Doesn’t Look Cooler

If you’ve ever spent a Saturday night staring at a giant blue plastic cooler in the middle of your patio, this is for you. The Veradek Cooler Side Table is a 2-in-1 outdoor side table with a hidden cooler inside. Twist the top open, add ice and drink, twist until closed. When not in use, it’s simply a beautiful side table that can elevate any outdoor space. Holds up to 55 cans, keeps everything cold for 12 hours thanks to double-walled insulation, and is made in Canada! It’s made from a rock-plastic composite that’s all-weather, fade-resistant, and can be left outdoors year-round (I have one, and I can attest to it). The fact that this table looks like a high-end designer table is a definite bonus.

2. A Better Way to Serve Cold Food

Most of us have done a variation of this move: put a few packs of ice around the dip bowl, hope for the best, then walk away. First, it looks a bit rough, and more importantly, it doesn’t work. There are two tools specifically made to fix it properly.

The Inflatable Ice Serving Tray is a large tray that you can inflate in seconds and fill with ice. If you imagine a mini children’s pool, that’s exactly what it is! it holds and cools bottles, sauces, charcuterie, fruit, shrimp plates, and anything else that needs to stay cool at the point of serving. It looks like a stylish bar setup and can also float making it perfect for drinking in the lake or pool.

For smaller setups, the Ice Condiment & Garnish Tray is your bar cart or BBQ setup’s best friend. Cool citrus, condiments, sauces, cocktail garnishes…it all stays under 4°C and looks intentional while remaining cool and safe to eat. This small investment will be used again and again this summer.

3. A Picnic Cooler That Doesn’t Steal Your Energy

You know the moment: standing in the parking lot at the beach or park, trying to figure out how you’re going to drag a cooler, a blanket, three kids, and a tote bag across a half-mile of sand.

The Rolling Cooler Backpack is the perfect hybrid solution: wheels for long flat stretches, backpack straps for stairs and rough terrain. Plus, it’s an isolated place for all-day fun and food with the family. The cooler you bring with you is the one that keeps your food safe and keeping it in the trunk because it’s too much of a hassle to carry doesn’t help anyone. If you want to enjoy the outdoors (picnics, beaches, sports games…) and enjoy food along the way, this is definitely cooler for you.

4. Niche Hacks Every Day Sportsman (Especially Golfers!) Needs.

This is a pleasant surprise. The Golf Bag Cooler Sleeve fits into a golf bag, sports backpack or beach tote and holds and insulates 6 cans or bottles. It’s the answer to those sweaty mid-game moments when your water somehow turns into pasta water, and you’ll do anything to get a cool drink. This is perfect for golfers, soccer parents, beach goers, and anyone who spends hours outside without a cooler, friendlier place to put everything.

5. Science Upgrades That Work on Every Cooler You Own

Regular ice has three problems: it melts, makes everything wet after melting, and only keeps you cold for a few hours before turning into warm water. It’s 2026, and I’m here to tell you that there’s a much better way.

Reusable Cooling Sheets are flexible mats that you freeze overnight and lay in any cooling container. This technology uses Phase Change Material (PCM) technology, the same science used in the pharmaceutical and food logistics fields. Instead of melting, PCM is kept at a specific cold temperature for hours, then refrozen when you put it back in the freezer. You’ve probably used a version of this in kids’ lunch bags. They are great. You can even lay it flat on the counter to keep the food cool while it sits. The result: approximately 3–5x longer cooling than ice, no water, no wet food, and no mess. It works with every other product on this list, making it a very smart upgrade.
