Don’t abandon Nwabali now that he is down – Etafia

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Greg Etafia has expressed confidence that Stanley Nwabali will soon secure a move to a new club this summer.

Speaking about the current goalkeeping situation, Etafia described Nwabali as a top-class goalkeeper who has continued to prove his worth despite the circumstances surrounding his departure from Chippa United.

Etafia, however, maintained that the Super Eagles coach should have invited Nwabali to the camp.

He highlights that the goalkeeper is at a point in his career when he needs support.

According to Etafia, it would have been beneficial for Nwabali to train with his teammates, even without participating in matches.

“All players want to play and Nwabali is no different from that,” Etafia said.

“Unfortunately, things happened to him at Chippa; he is a free agent now. There are a lot of clubs looking at him.”

Etafia further stated that the Super Eagles coaching team could still have included Nwabali in the camp to help him maintain his fitness and confidence.

“I think the goalkeeping coach and the head coach should have called Nwabali to train with the team for the Unity Cup because of what he has done in the past.”

“Even if he is not among the first three goalkeepers, he should be the fourth to come to camp. He knows that he is not going to play official matches with the team, but the training will help him a lot.”

“He will play next season. He is a top-class goalkeeper and has done very well for the Nigerian national team in the two AFCON tournaments he has played in.

“He is the number one goalkeeper, but since he doesn’t have a club, I think the coaches feel they have options and want to give opportunities to others.”

Nwabali has been without a club since the beginning of the year after leaving Chippa United by mutual agreement.

The goalkeeper had previously been linked with a move to Simba SC, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper reportedly currently has offers on the table that he is reviewing ahead of next season.
