Ekiti LG, Vice President sued for alleged self-abduction, remanded in custody

The Vice President of Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Grace Ogunleye, has been detained at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Center following her arraignment for alleged involvement in a fake kidnapping.

Ogunleye was booked on Wednesday before the Magistrates Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti alongside three other defendants on charges bordering on conspiracy and self-kidnapping.

The Nigerian State Police Force said the suspects were brought to court following the conclusion of investigations into the controversial incident which initially sparked public concern.

Police Prosecutor Akinwale Oriyomi told the court that the case file had been forwarded to the Directorate of Prosecutions for legal advice. He later sought remand of the accused pending further directions.

Ruling on the application, the Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, ordered that Ogunleye and the co-accused be remanded in custody at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre.

The case arises from an incident that occurred on May 20, when news was given of the disappearance of the vice-president of the council. Her vehicle was reportedly found abandoned along the Ipere-Iludun Ekiti road, fueling fears that she had been abducted by gunmen shortly after leaving the council secretariat.

She was later found unharmed during a joint security operation.

However, police investigations revealed that the kidnapping was staged, allegedly to raise funds to pay off personal financial obligations and political commitments.

Reacting to the development, Ilejemeje LGA Chairman, Pius Dada, condemned the alleged act, describing it as “embarrassing” and capable of eroding public trust in governance.

He stressed that any public official found guilty will face the full weight of the law, insisting that no one will be protected from prosecution.

The matter has been adjourned pending further legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
