EndBadGovernance protest organizers make 17 new demands to Nigerian government

Organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest on Tuesday presented 17 demands to the Federal Government ahead of a planned rally on December 1.

Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore reads out the demands to journalists in Abuja.

They are demanding the repeal of the 1999 constitution, restructuring of the country, payment of the minimum wage of N250,000 to workers, immediate and unconditional release of detained protesters, unfreezing of their frozen assets, compensation for the suffering and hardships experienced during the protests and the prosecution of government officials accused of suppressing the protests and human rights violations, among others.

Sowore said: โ€œPay Nigerian workers a minimum wage of not less than N250,000 per month.

“Invest heavily in education and provide grants, not loans, to Nigerian students. Aggressively make education free and compulsory for children across Nigeria.

โ€œUnconditionally release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and demilitarize the South East. All #ENDSARS and political prisoners should also be released and compensated, among other demands.โ€

Amnesty International claimed a few days ago that more than 1,000 people who took part in the nationwide protests from 1-10 August were still in detention centers across the country.

The watchdog accused the Nigerian government of cracking down on peaceful protesters by charging many of them in courts across the country.
