FCT NUT staff collapses and dies on the way to work

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of one of its staff members, Jessey A. Audu, who reportedly collapsed and died on his way to work in the Gwagwalada Area Council.

The tragic accident, which occurred on Tuesday morning in the Gwahaon area, near an army checkpoint, left colleagues and family members in shock.

A staff of the union, Ibrahim Adamu, said the deceased left his house in the early hours of the day but suddenly collapsed and fell into a drain along the roadside.

According to him, passers-by who noticed the motionless body raised the alarm before the police and some residents rushed to the scene.

Adamu said the police, with the assistance of locals, identified the deceased and contacted NUT officials, who immediately mobilized and evacuated him to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

However, medical staff at the hospital confirmed him dead on arrival and his remains were later deposited at the mortuary.
Confirming the incident, FCT NUT Wing President Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas said the union was devastated by the loss.

“I just returned from the morgue where we deposited Jessey’s remains,” he said shortly.

Findings indicated that the deceased, who worked as a cleaner at the FCT NUT state secretariat, was originally from Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, but resided in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada.

Colleagues describe him as a diligent and committed worker who was active and healthy until Monday.

One of his colleagues, who simply identified himself as Chris, said the deceased was at work the previous day, carrying out his cleaning duties before closing at around 4pm.

“We were together on Monday. He cleaned everywhere, finished work around 4pm and went home. He was healthy and friendly,” she said.

Police authorities from Gwagwalada division also confirmed the incident, pointing out that preliminary observations suggested a sudden collapse before it fell into the drainage.

The sudden death has continued to generate grief within the NUT secretariat, with staff members struggling to come to terms with the loss of their colleague.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Morgue, with the family expected to announce burial arrangements.
