FIFA moves to stabilize Nigerian football, setting NFF transition deadline of May 2027

FIFA has approved the establishment of a normalization committee to oversee the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), with a mandate to manage the transition to new executive leadership and complete its assigned responsibilities by 31 May 2027.

The approval, announced by the NFF Communications Department on Thursday, was granted by the FIFA Council Bureau following a leadership crisis that has left the federation facing uncertainty over its administration and election process.

In a letter signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and addressed to Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, the global football body said that the committee members would be jointly selected by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.

“The normalization committee will consist of an appropriate number of members, who will be jointly appointed by FIFA and CAF as soon as possible,” the letter said.

The committee’s tenure will depend on how quickly it completes its responsibilities, although FIFA has set external deadlines for its assignments.

“The period for the normalization committee to carry out its functions will end as soon as all its tasks are completed, but no later than May 31 2027,” added the letter.

FIFA also stipulated that membership of the interim body would not provide an opportunity to contest the position in the next NFF elections, effectively separating the transition process from the fight for permanent leadership of the federation.

“No member of the normalization committee is eligible to fill the position during the upcoming NFF elections under any circumstances,” he said.

Until this committee is formally established, the NFF secretariat will continue to manage the day-to-day operations of the Nigerian football federation and administration.

The decision follows the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi and other members of the federation’s Executive Committee on August 27, 2026.

The resignation comes amid criticism over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The departure of top federation officials created a leadership vacuum and disrupted preparations for the NFF elections originally scheduled for September 27.

FIFA’s intervention is intended to provide a temporary administrative structure while the federation works to elect a new executive committee.

The effectiveness of these arrangements will depend on the timely appointment of committee members, completion of their mandates, and the conduct of a credible election process within the specified timeframe.

With a May 31, 2027 deadline, the normalization committee will have a set amount of time to address the immediate administrative challenges facing the federation and prepare the ground for the return of elected leadership.
