The two main leaders of the Nigeria opposition have joined a new political party to challenge President Bolatinubu and his party in power in the next elections.
Counting the presidential elections of 2027 – Peter Obi
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have chosen the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new political home after detaching themselves from their respective parties: the Democratic Party of the Peoples (PDP) and the Labor Party (LP).

This is one of the greatest grooves in Nigerian politics from the end of military domain in 1999.
Some maximum political weights of the ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) party of Tinubu have also thrown their weight behind the training.
● Why have they united forces?
The announcement is the culmination of a series of talks among the leaders to put a united front in the 2027 elections, rather than dividing their vote.

Tinubu won the 2023 elections with only 37%of the votes after opposition supporters were divided between Abubakar who obtained 29%and OBI with 25%.
Obi had detached himself from the PDP after the party had chosen Abubakar as presidential candidate.
At their presentation with the ADC, the provisional president David Mark said that it was an attempt to save the country’s democracy and to prevent Nigeria from becoming a single party state.
Both the PDP and LP are fighting the internal crises, which some believe have been instigated from external forces.
Analyst Shehu Iliyasu said that Abubakar and Obi were learning the lessons of the last elections.
“Both Atiku [Abubakar] And Obi felt that they approached so much in 2023 and would perhaps have won a joint ticket, so they want to change their mistake by working together this time, “he told the BBC.
● Who else is in the AdC?
Former vice -president Atiku Abubakar should apply for the president in 2027.
The greatest challengers of Tinubu in the last elections, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are the face of the coalition.
Although there is still a long way to go before the candidates are officially announced, political commentators provide that 78-year-old Abubakar will have another blow to the presidency-he would be his fifth attempt-with the former governor of Anambra Obi, 63, as his choice of vice-presidential.
Other heavy political weights in the coalition include the former president of the Senate David Mark, who like Atiku is leaving the PDP, together with his former UCHE Secondus president, and the former ally of Tinubu transformed the enemy Nasir El-Romai and the powerful minister in the last pantry Rotimi Amaechi.
● Is the ADC a new party?
No. Politicians are joining an existing party that has an acronym closer to the Alliance (ADA) Alfocratic (Ada) who wanted to register.
The party was originally appointed Alliance for Democratic Change when it was trained in 2005, but the African Democratic Congress was renamed when the party was recorded at the Nigerian independent National Electoral Commission (INC).
Jamilu Danladi of the ADC said he was skeptical to prepare the ADA in time, and that is why they went to the ADC instead.
The recording of a new political party is a difficult process. The President of the Inc recently announced that he had received over 100 questions from associations and groups who have presented letters of intent to become political parties.
Many of these will not do it, since, apart from other conditions, the group must have a presence in at least 24 of the 36 states of Nigeria and have a headquarters in Abuja.
The Dumebi Kachikwu of the ADC has arrived fifth in the last presidential elections and has two members of Parliament in the lower chamber.
Although it is not one of the great parties in Nigeria, the ADC has a good national diffusion and an active political machinery in each state, which will undoubtedly be enhanced with the money and the support of the maximum political weights that have joined.
His first presidential candidate in 2007, Professor Pat Utomi was decisive to obtain national acceptance as he is a famous economist.
● Can Abubakar work together again?
This is the question about the lips of many, since the vast support base of OBI does not want to see it play the second violin to anyone else – and this is why it left the PDP to join the Labor Party in the last elections.
While the supporters of Abubakar feel with him the only former vice -president in search of the presidency, every other politician is naturally second.
When both politicians worked together in 2019 with Obi that served as an Abubakar racing partner, they lost against the Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.
When Obi left the PDP for LP in 2022, it was a peaceful separation without Rancor.
The former governor said at the moment that he was moving to LP because he aligned himself with his aspirations.
As if they both knew that fate would bring them together, neither of them spoke sick of the other before or during the 2023 campaign.
It will be interesting to see how things go out between today and 2027.
● What are their possibilities in 2027?
The analyst Ben Kenneth said he believed that the coalition had more possibilities to defeat Tinubu than the last time.
“If you look at what Atiku and Obi have achieved in the last elections, it is clear to see that they would have won by assuming that they have worked together, so it is a good thing that they realized that they need each other,” he told the BBC.
However, another Sani Hamisu analyst believed that 73 -year -old Tinubu has more possibilities now than 2023.
“In Nigeria and Africa, when a leader is in charge in search of a second term, it does not barely lose, it is very rare and this is why I feel that Tinubu has more possibilities now that when he was not in charge in 2023,” he said.
● will Tinubu work again?
The APC in power has already approved the current president, whose mandate expires on May 29, 2027, to look for a second term.
However, the questions about his health lingers as he will be 75 years old within the next elections and 79 if he should be elected and finish his second term.
Some media reports say that its recent trips abroad have been for medical reasons, but the presidency denied that, saying that the president is healthy and in good shape.
The APC says that it is not annoyed by its rivals that join the ADC, which she does not see as a real threat.
The president of the acting Ali Bukar Dalori told the BBC Hausa that the coalition would not have any impact on the APC.
“Nobody talks about a coalition if not in Abuja. Even in Abuja, they are in a hotel and when they are defeated in the elections, he will leave the country,” he said.
● What does this mean for the PDP and the Labor Party?
The largest opposition party of the country, the PDP had excluded by joining the ADC, preferring to face the APC alone.
The Labor Party also invited his supporters to remain concentrated and resolved behind the party, denying all the plans to join a coalition.
For the LP, losing Peter Obi who has filed his profile at new levels will be a hard blow, and some say that it is unlikely that he recovers in the near future.
Is the other biggest coalition loser is the PDP? who has lost several big names.
The analyst Iliyasu Hadi believed that the PDP was destined to lose its status as a larger opposition party of the country to the ADC.
“When you look at the caliber of politicians in the Adc and those who remain in the PDP, it is clear to see that the ADC will soon become the main opposition party of Nigeria, [it’s] Just a matter of time, “he said.
For the moment, none of the parts seems to have no other candidate of the caliber of Abubakar or Obi.
However, they control 11 states, which gives them a strong base, provided that those governors do not stand out for the APC or ADC.
