Human Kinetics & Health Education advances to Saturday’s final at the University of Lagos after a spectacular penalty shootout victory over TVESA
With three minutes left on the clock and a penalty shootout looming, the NAPHER SD coaching staff made a decisive decision and changed everything.
Oyero Rasaq Ayomide, goalkeeper from the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education (NAPHER SD), entered the field from the bench moments before what would become one of the most exciting penalty shootouts of this year’s Faculty Dean’s Cup.
A test of character from the first whistle
NAPHER SD’s semi-final against TVESA (widely considered one of the most formidable teams in the tournament) was never going to be easy. The department fell behind from the start, losing 1-0 just a few minutes into the match. But resilience, a hallmark of the NAPHER SD team this season, brought them back to level, and the match led to a penalty shootout tied 1-1 after regulation time.
It was at that crucial moment that the coach went to his bench and called Oyero.
“I trusted God and stayed focused”
By his own admission, the young goalkeeper immediately felt the weight of the moment. “When he told me that I should change, I became very nervous because I knew that the result could depend on my performance,” recalls Oyero.
“But I trusted God and stayed focused. I knew I was going to do whatever it took to make sure I took my department to the finals.”
That approach proved decisive. Oyero saved three TVESA penalties, helping SD NAPHER to a 4-2 shootout victory and secure a place in the final.
A hero’s reception
For a player who barely featured in the run-up to the penalty shootout, the praise from his teammates and fans hit differently. “The most important part of all of this was the feeling of receiving praise from my teammates, from our fans and from my fellow students,” he said. “This was very special to me and I am very grateful to have played a key role in this.”
Eyes on the final
NAPHER SD will face their opponents in the Dean Cup final tomorrow. Saturday, at the University of Lagos – and Oyero is already channeling the momentum. “Our goal is to finish the job in the final,” he said calmly. “We will do the work during normal time; there will be no sanctions again.”
