How Zulum is rebuilding Borno, one institution at a time, by Goni M. Tar – THISAGE

Rebuilding a state devastated by years of insurrection requires more than simple promises. It requires vision, determination and investments that improve people’s lives. Under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Borno State continues to pursue recovery through the development of critical infrastructure, education and healthcare.

One of the most notable achievements of this journey is the Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH), Maiduguri, a modern 400-bed healthcare facility commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima on 23 October 2026.

The KIU Teaching Hospital represents a landmark achievement in the healthcare sector and a new chapter in Borno’s recovery.

The journey began in 2020, when the Borno State Government initiated plans to establish a teaching hospital and a College of Medical Sciences to address the shortage of healthcare workers and improve access to specialized medical services.

Construction began on November 19, 2020, marking the beginning of a project aimed at transforming healthcare delivery in the state.

Today the hospital boasts modern diagnostic equipment, including an MRI scanner, a 160-slice CT scanner, 4D ultrasound machines and digital mammography. It also has specialist departments, a medical college complex, a student hostel, a 200-unit staff facility and an oxygen plant.

This is more than a hospital; it is an investment in human lives, medical education and the future of Borno State.

The facility is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside Borno for specialist care, while providing the opportunity to train doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for the State and the North East at large.

The assignment also coincided with the inauguration of Yerwa Practice Mega Primary School and another mega primary school built under the Kashim Shettima Free Education Programme, underscoring the importance of healthcare and education in rebuilding society.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized that leaders are ultimately remembered for the institutions they create, the lives they improve and the lasting contributions they make to society.

His message reflects the importance of Governor Zulum’s investment in institutions designed to serve generations beyond his administration.

A NEW BORNO IS RISING

Borno’s recovery journey is ongoing, but projects like KIUTH demonstrate the importance of building strong institutions that can improve people’s lives for years to come.

For patients, the hospital offers hope of better access to specialized healthcare. For students, it creates medical training opportunities. For the state, it represents progress towards a stronger healthcare system.

Beyond the ruins of the past, Governor Zulum is working towards a Borno characterized by renewed hope, stronger institutions and sustainable development.

Ultimately, the true measure of this achievement will be the lives saved, the professionals trained and the quality of healthcare provided to people.

Because the greatest legacy of leadership is not simply what is built today, but what continues to serve humanity for generations to come.
