IGP is looking for an urgent legislative action to get out of the police from the contribution pension regime – Thage

By Victor Osula, Abuja

In the aftermath of the recent protest by Police Pensioners for bad pension and life conditions, the police inspector, Kayode Egbetokun, invited the National Assembly to urgently start legislative measures to exempt the Nigerian police forces from the contribution pension regime (CPS), which describes the current pretent of the Polishing police officers as “humiliating” and ” allowed “.

In a letter addressed to the president of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, the IGP expressed deep concern for what he described as a “deeply worrying question” that continues to erode morals and institutional trust within force.

The letter, dated 25 July 2025, and recognized by the office of the President of the Senate on July 29, highlighted the debilitating impact of the CPS on police pensioners.

Egbetokun observed that the current pension system does not take into account the particular risks and sacrifices associated with the police service in Nigeria.

“Today, most retired officers of the Nigerian police forces live in conditions not only unacceptable but humiliating conditions, given the sacrifices they made at the service of the nation,” said IGP.

He added that the monthly salaries received pursuant to the CPS are “frighteningly low and seriously inadequate” to meet the basic life needs, pushing many officers retired in difficulty and despair after decades of service.

The appeal of the IGP echoes to the longtime concerns raised by the police defense groups and retired staff, who have repeatedly solicited the national assembly to remove the strength from the regime and establish a more adapted pension structure that reflects police realities in Nigeria.
