The Cross-Party Consultative Council has raised the alarm over rising costs of nomination forms by major political parties, warning that the trend could weaken democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general election.
The body described the development as a growing threat to inclusion and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Speaking in Lagos, James Adeshina said rising fees are making it difficult for capable but less financially privileged individuals to compete for public office.
He noted that the high cost of nomination forms is gradually limiting opportunities for wealthy candidates with strong financial backing
Adeshina warned that this trend could transform Nigeria’s democratic process into what he described as an “elite contest”, rather than a competition based on ideas, expertise and service.
He stressed that political participation should not be determined by financial ability.
The IPAC spokesperson urged political parties to reconsider their pricing structures to ensure wider participation.
According to him, reducing nomination fees would help restore trust in the electoral process and strengthen the party’s internal democracy.
Adeshina acknowledged the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure credible elections.
However, he stressed that transparency must start with fair candidate selection processes within political parties.
He encouraged aspirants discouraged by high fees to explore other political parties with cheaper entry requirements.
According to him, several IPAC member parties offer accessible routes for credible candidates to participate in elections.
The council has identified key dangers associated with expensive application forms, including:
* Exclusion of qualified candidates
* Weakening of democracy within parties
* Decline in public trust
* Emergence of profit-oriented governance
IPAC urged stakeholders, including political parties and regulatory bodies, to work together to protect the integrity and inclusiveness of Nigeria’s democracy.
He emphasized that electoral credibility goes beyond voting processes to include equal access to candidacy.
