IPC Spj-Hub condemns the illegal possession of the Senior journalist of Fij, Kano Journalist-Thage

The International Press Center, IPC, Lagos-Nigeria, through its safety and protection of journalists (spj), condemned the illegal possession of Sodeeq Aanda, a senior reporter at the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which was arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday 9 September 2025, in Ado-Ceiti.

According to the head of the freedom of the press, Spj-Hub, Melody Akinjiyan, the information that reaches the IPC-SPJ HUB says that: “The police had convened Aanda on the basis of a petition of Abayomi Fasina, vice chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ceiti (Fuoye), complaining Cyberbullying, Blackmail and Criminal Defamp.”

The information also states that “Aanda was held at the headquarters of the Ekiti State Police Command for over eight (8) hours, for the orders of the police commissioner of Ekiti State, Joseph Eribes, after having honored the invitation.

The executive director of the IPC, Lanre Arogundade in a declaration, said: “This action by the police is clearly an attempt to further suffocate the freedom of the press and intimidate journalists who report issues of public interest”.

“The police should desist from being used by the elites to attack, arrest and retain journalists, instead they should support the principles of democracy,” said Arogundade.

Spj-Hub also asks the command of the Kano State Police to desist from the intimidation and harassment of Abdulaziz Aliyu, a journalist with Waraka online TV, who was constantly mistreated and was arrested for a publication.

Yakubu Salisu, president of the Kano online journalists association (askoj), confirmed this accident to our freedom of the press freedom, stating that “Abdulaziz Aliyu was held for a story that he published a few months ago”.

Spj-Hub reiterates that if the police have problems with the published stories or with the journalists concerned, the right and lawful trial should be taken to seek compensation instead of the constant self-help.
