Little-known Nigerian Olagunju joins Arokodare in Wolves first team

Nigerian international striker Tolu Arokodare has been joined in the first team of Wolverhampton Wanderers, a team relegated from the English Premier League, by another Nigerian, reports OwnGoalNigeria.com.

It has been confirmed that Wolves have been relegated to the English Championship and many expect them to begin rebuilding their squad with a view to instant promotion back to the English Premier League.

It is not certain that Arokodare will be part of that search, but another Nigerian, Saheed Olagunju, has been a candidate for a permanent first-team place next season in the Championship.

He has already tasted first-team action by being on the bench in the English Premier League, however, it is in the under-18s where he has truly proven his worth since arriving from Chelsea.

This season he has made 34 appearances in all competitions and now looks set to be promoted to the first team just in time, before the start of pre-season training.

Head of international youth recruitment Harry Hooman described the 17-year-old in glowing terms following his departure from Chelsea in August 2024. “Saheed is someone we admired from afar and for a long time while he was at Chelsea. “If there was ever an opportunity to do something then we were going to look at moving and that opportunity became available so we moved quickly and we are excited to have him in the building.”

“He’s a very tall, athletic left defender, but he’s also comfortable on the ball. Defensively, he likes to be on the front foot and play high up the pitch; he’s comfortable defending on that high line and has that athleticism to defend the space behind. He’s still growing a lot in his frame and developing physically, which is exciting because he’s nowhere near finished in terms of what he could be. “There’s a lot of potential there and a high ceiling in terms of his long-term potential.

“We were really impressed with his attitude and intelligence, and he seems to come from a very good family with good people around him. We hope this helps him adjust and then move forward in the years to come.”
