Lookman’s heroics help Atalanta beat Fiorentina in classic five-goal thriller

Ademola Lookman scored and provided an assist as Atalanta fought back twice to beat Fiorentina 3-2 in a thrilling Serie A match on Sunday.

Following an impressive display during the international window with Nigeria, where he scored twice in two games, Lookman ensured La Dea picked up three valuable points in their first home game of the season, after returning to the Gewiss Stadium.

Rolando Mandragora put Fiorentina ahead in the first half with a great shot that beat Marco Carnesecchi.

Atalanta restored parity moments later thanks to some wonderful skill from the Nigerian international, who broke away down the left of Edoardo Bove before crossing for Mateo Retegui to head home.

Atalanta fell behind again a few minutes later when Moise Kean headed in a goal that allowed the visitors to regain the lead.

Fiorentina almost made it 3-1 two minutes later when Kean got away from Isak Hien but headed a ball in off the near post from a tight angle.

Atalanta punished the Viola for missing the chance when Charles De Ketelaere equalised, rising above the crowd to head in Ederson’s cross from a set-piece.

With just a few minutes remaining in the first half, Atalanta went 3-2 up when Lookman cut inside from the left and fired his shot through a sea of legs near the bottom corner.

There were no further goals in the second half, as Lookman’s goal proved to be the winner.
