Nans to stage a mass protest for the strike of prolonged teachers in primary schools FCT – Thage

By Victor Osula, Abuja

The National Association of Nigerian Students (Nans) has announced its intention to undertake a mass protest on Wednesday 2 July, for the continuous closure of public primary schools in the territory of the federal capital (FCT), resulting from an unresolved strike by teachers.

The FCT chapter of the Union of Teachers of Nigeria (NUT) began an industrial action in March 2025 to protest against the non -payment of the minimum wage N70.000 approved.

On Monday, the president of Nans, Olushola Oladoja, expressed deep concern for prolonged closure, describing the situation as “unacceptable” and a serious violation of children’s rights to basic education.

“Despite multiple appeals, correspondences and requests for constructive dialogue with the relevant authorities, no significant steps have been taken to resolve the impasse or reopen the affected schools,” said Oladoja.

He accused the FCT administration of “deliberate negligence and contempt” for the educational future of the Nigerian child, observing that the closure affects the children of low -income families in an disproportionate way.

Previously, the student body had issued a seven -day ultimatum to the FCT administration, asking for an urgent resolution of the crisis or faces the widespread protests led by the students.

“In response, Nans national leadership issues a last invitation to action and announces a mass protest to request the immediate reopening of all public primary schools closed in the FCT,” said Oladoja.

He revealed that the demonstrators will meet at the administrative secretariat of the FCT in Area 11, Garki, Abuja, by 7:00 on Wednesday. Participants will wear black as a symbol of mourning for what Nans has described as the “death of basic education” in the territory.

Oladoja also directed all Nans structures throughout the FCT and nearby states – Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger and Kaduna – to start the full mobilization of students, civil society organizations and supporters of the rights of education for protest.

He also commissioned the area leadership of Zone A and Zone C with coordination of a widespread participation, adding that the protest goes beyond education.

“This protest does not only concern education: it is a struggle for justice, equality and soul of the future of Nigeria,” he said.
